This is the only community on the Main Line that is both on it and off it: the area around Haverford train station, which includes Haverford College and parts of Haverford and Lower Merion townships, is considered part of the Main Line, but much of Haverford Township itself, including Brookline, Havertown, Llanerch, Oakmont and Pilgrim Gardens, is not considered part of the Main Line. Nonetheless, all of it was part of the “Welsh Tract” that forms the core of today’s Main Line. Haverford is home to the Merion Golf Club, host to more major pro and U.S. Amateur championships than any other golf course in the region; the Haverford Friends Meeting, the oldest house of worship in present-day Delaware County; and the 1797 Federal School, the second-oldest school building in what is now Delaware County.
